The Power of a Phone Call

This one will be brief and straightforward. No extensive rule-set to follow. However, this is a massive hurdle for some engineers to overcome. Whenever you are about to or actively engaged in a lengthy email thread/message chain, consider dialing the phone and calling the person.

It may be odd at first; you may be nervous. If that is the case, write down the questions you have for them, phrase them to be thoughtful and considerate of their time. Be prepared to share your screen if applicable. Get the answers you need and get back to solving.

Too often, we" need" a log of our conversations. That is plain garbage. Note that the conversation took place and decisions in the active work item, if needed, then move on with the solution. We are all people with a need to connect, interact, and solve. Taking a moment to call simplifies communication for everyone. No one will ever complain when communication is simplified.
